Seventeen volumes of letters of the Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak so far discovered, to private and public personalities in the era that saw the Communist revolution, the Holocaust, the settlement of the Land of Israel, and the re-establishment of Jewish life in Europe and America.

Included are almost six thousand letters, from 5658/1897, when he was appointed to the leadership of Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, until just before his passing in 5680/1950.

The letters cover a broad and varied range of topics from all areas of life: Jewish Law, Thought, The service of G-d, Jewish history, Introductory Jewish Education, Communal work, Personal advice, Stories, Directives, Blessings, and more. They give a picture of the intense and fruitful relationships and contacts that the Rebbe established with thousands of people, members of many and varied circles and organizations, in countries all over the world.

The first ten volumes are in chronological order. Volumes 11-17 are supplemental, containing letters discovered afterward. Each volume is introduced with an essay covering issues and historical background, with special reference to the activities of the Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak during the period of the letters.
