The gesso was painted on loose woven hessian fabric over a wooden frame that was embellished with string, pens, beads and tin leaf. The frieze was made in three sections and hung in the tea rooms next to its companion piece ‘The May Queen’ which was made by Margaret Macdonald, Mackintosh’s wife. The frieze depicts wassailing, a pagan fertility ceremony to ensure a good crop. We also sell a glasses case, pocket mirror and paperweight featuring the Wassail design.
